SEAOSC Non-Profit Foundation

The Structural Engineers Association of Southern California Foundation (SEAOSC Foundation) is a separate, non-profit, 501(c)(3) corporation started in 2009.

SEAOSC Foundation Mission:
The SEAOSC Foundation's purpose is to advance the study of the scientific principles of structural engineering. In furtherance of its purposes, the SEAOSC Foundation may:

 (a) Sponsor scientific research, both fundamental and applied, intended to aid in the advancement of structural engineering.
(b)Provide tuition scholarships for students intending to enroll or are currently enrolled in engineering programs with a structural engineering specialization leading to a degree from an accredited institution of higher learning.
(c)Publish the results of studies, papers, and other reports of special importance and significance to structural engineers.
(d)Solicit financial support from structural engineers, foundations, and the general public to support this corporation’s activities.
(e)Engage in any other activity in furtherance of the purposes of this corporation, and not prohibited by law or by this corporation’s Articles of Incorporation or Bylaws.

The SEAOSC Foundation:

The foundation in its goals to further the development of the structural engineering profession looks for partners, be it individuals, companies or corporations, to pursue structural engineering innovation and research for use in the public domain.  The foundation can assist in the development process of specific structural engineering research projects and publishing of any findings.

The foundation is dependant upon donations for its operation and funding of research projects and annual student scholarships.  Those interested in obtaining more information about the foundation or possibly making contributions can use this  donation program link or scroll to the bottom of this page.

Annual Student Scholarships:
SEAOSC awards scholarships to college engineering students studying structural engineering in February of each year in the geographical area that SEAOSC represents, which includes Los Angeles, Orange, San Bernardino, Ventura, Santa Barbara, San Luis Obispo and Kern Counties.

The civil engineering faculity at each of the participating engineering schools from these regions nominates a candidate for a SEAOSC scholorship award.  Currently the SEAOSC younger members committee reviews these nominations and determines the reciepents that will be honored at the annual SEAOSC February Awards dinner.

Alumni of these engineering programs often contribute to the annual scholarship fund, and can do so through the SEAOSC Foundation as a tax deductible donation.  Use the following link to find out more information on the Scholarship program: Annual Student Scholarships

Research Projects:

Oversight:
A specific committee is created for each project award by the SEAOSC Foundation to provide oversight to the SEAOSC Foundation

Past Research Projects:
Testing of Gypboard Shear Walls (2009)  - Pursuing Additional Funding
 1. The SEAOSC Committee on Performance Based Design of Low-Rise Wood Frame Structures provided oversight to the SEAOSC Foundation in the collection, analysis and review of information and techniques, and in the testing of construction assembles; for the purpose of developing comprehensive understandings of the behavior of material combinations under seismic loading in gypboard sheathed shear walls.  The expectation of the findings is to allow for better performance than the minimum "life safety" expectations currently presented in the building code.
 2. The body of knowledge developed may serve as the foundation for the development of performance design standards for future code adoptions.  In the interum, communities or individuals, on a voluntary basis, could use the performance findings on gypsum sheathed shear walls to reduce financial losses due to earthquakes.

Donations:
As a 501(c)(3) nonprofit corporation, all donations made to the SEAOSC Foundation are tax deductible to the extent of the law by the individual making the contribution.
