    The repair of existing concrete structures can represent a significant challenge to design professionals, owners, building officials and contractors.  The challenges arise due to a myriad of questions regarding the necessary extent of repairs, responsibilities during the project and uncertainties regarding governing code requirements.  The ACI 562 Code for Assessment, Repair and Rehabilitation of Existing Concrete Structures (ACI 562-19) was specifically developed to provide design professionals a code for the repair of existing concrete structures and represents the first material specific repair code in US practice and the first code specifically developed to be integrated with the International Existing Building Code (IEBC). The code was improved to help design professionals identify unsafe conditions (based upon observed conditions or demand to capacity ratios) and better integrate with the IEBC.

    ACI 562-19 includes specific provisions for:

    • Assessment of existing concrete structures;
    • Load and resistance factors for assessment and repair design;
    • Design of repairs;
    • Durability requirements; and
    • Quality assurance.
    ACI 562 was developed to be performance-based (in contrast to prescriptive) to provide design professional the maximum amount of flexibility in developing repair solutions.  The document’s extensive commentary, including a comprehensive list of references, provides guidance to design professionals using the code.  The presentation will describe the development of ACI 562, the relationship of ACI 562 with other building codes and focus on use of the repair code on typical concrete repair projects.

    • Webinar

    Thursday, May 30, 2019

    The structural repair and retrofit of concrete structures utilizing externally bonded Fiber Reinforced Polymer (FRP) systems can present some of the most difficult challenges for retrofit design.  FRP materials provide cost and durability advantages due to their lighter weight, corrosion resistance, and ease of installation compared with conventional retrofit techniques such as using structural steel and concrete enlargement.

    However, the linear elastic behavior and brittle failure mode of FRP can create challenges for design professionals to properly account for these material characteristics on performance of the retrofitted elements.  This is due to various design limits that are unique to FRP materials and are not typically considered for standard reinforced concrete design.

    This webinar will provide guidance to design professionals on how to retrofit structural column for shear, confinement, and deficient lap-splices to enhance the ductility using externally applied FRP reinforcement.  Design examples showing typical steps used in calculations will be presented and discussed during this webinar.
